It is one of the premier institutions in this region and established in the year 1962 by Dr. D.C. Pavate then Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad. This is a constituent College of Karnatak University, Dharwad and approved by UGC under section 2(f) and 12(B). Smt. Sulabha Panadikar was the first Principal of this College in the year 1962-64, who was the one of the members of Kothari Education Commission Report (1964-66). This is Co-Educational College and provides pre-service training to the secondary school teachers. This institution is catering the needs of the secondary school teachers, teacher-educators and administrative officers of Karnataka State. The products of this institution are working in the institutions of throughout India and also in Abroad.
The Bombay legislature of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency established Karnatak University through the Karnatak University Act 1949. It became a statutory University on 1 st March 1950. The jurisdiction of the University covers Dharwad. Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada districts. It has several Post Graduate centres. The University (888 acres) is offering courses in the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Management, Science and Technology and Social Sciences. Symbolic of the University’s vision and mission the emblem of the University consists of papal tree at the centre, an open book. Figures of a bull, a rising sun and the legend ‘Arive Guru’ i.e., Wisdom is Guru, implying that both wisdom and knowledge should be all pervading and eradicate illiteracy.
The Department was established in 1962. The faculty is contributing considerably to the promotion of teaching and research in Education. The course contents are kept in pace with changing trends in teaching and learning of emerging technologies, sources and services, systems and networks.
